The DB Marg police were at their wit's end while they tried to get to the root of a theft case in a garment store. The accused had left no clues behind, the CCTV cameras too did not help as they were shut and the grilled staff were also of no use. But finally, a tip-off helped the police solve the case.

The accused worked as a salesman in a shop that had dealings with the garment store. During one of his visits to the store he managed to get hold of its keys, got a duplicate key made and then committed the theft.

The arrested person has been identified as Omprakash Joshi (25), a resident of Gulal Wadi on VP Road. According to the police, complainant Suresh Purohit (22), a resident of Bhayandar, has a garment shop named Puja NX at Grant Road. Suresh owns it with a relative named Uttam Purohit (32).

On April 27, Uttam had gone to his native place and the store was being looked after by Suresh. On May 5, Suresh learnt that the rear door of the shop was opened using a duplicate key and Rs14.50 lakh was missing. He then lodged a complaint.

"There are four CCTV cameras in the shop which are connected to the main switch. When the main switch is shut at the time of closing the shop, the CCTVs also get shut. We had checked the traffic police CCTV camera of Grant Road junction, but that too could not give us any lead. We questioned 11 staffers from the shop owned by Suresh and Uttam but they did not seem to be involved," said an officer from DB Marg police station.

The police then received a tip-off from an informer stating that Joshi, who works in a garment shop in DB Marg, is involved in the theft case. "We picked up Joshi on Saturday and after sustained interrogation he blurted it all out. He also said that he was well aware of the monetary transactions that took place in Puja NX," the officer said.

As per Joshi, on May 2, when he was walking past Puja NX, he saw the rear door open. "He went inside and spotted a key kept inside. He immediately went to a key-maker to get a duplicate made. Once armed with the key, he kept the original key back at the spot again," said the officer.

Around 11pm on May 4, Joshi entered the shop and decamped with the cash. "Joshi revealed that he has kept the money at his home in Rajasthan. We are yet to recover it. Joshi has been booked under sections 454 (Lurking house-trespass or house-breaking in order to commit offence punishable with imprisonment), 457 (Lurking house-trespass or house-breaking by night in order to commit offence punishable with imprisonment) and 380 (punishment for theft) of Indian Penal Code," the officer added.
