A young man, who attacked a person with a knife and snatched his mobile phone in Chembur a little after midnight on Monday, was chased and caught by police men returning from Dahi Handi patrol duty.
The RCF police identified the attacker as Siddhesh Kamble, 19, a resident of Ghatkopar. They said he has a previous criminal record with five cases registered against him at Ghatkopar police station.
Kamble slashed the man while taking his high-end mobile phone and ran away. The victim shouted for help, and his cries were heard by police constable Subhas Barsingh, who was riding by on a motorcycle.
Barsingh chased the attacker. He was joined by senior inspector Dilip Raut and inspector S Jadhav who were driving back to the police station after Janmashtami bandobast.
The police men, all of RCF police station, caught up with Kamble at Vashi naka.
