An unusual thing that has come to light after the murder of a 25-year-old resident of Vitthalwadi's Samta colony is that relatives of the deceased attacked policemen with choppers, knives, hockey and bamboo sticks. As the policemen were ill-equipped to manage the attacking mob, they tried to flee; none were severely injured.
The Vithalwadi police, on Thursday, went to Central hospital in Ulhasnagar for investigation, but were given a tip off that the relatives of the deceased are forcing a shutdown in Samta colony. They immediately rushed to the spot but were shocked to see a group of people running towards them with choppers, knives, hockey and bamboo sticks.
Police Naik, Ganesh Patil who was amongst the 4 policemen who went to Samta Colony, says, "When we reached the spot, initially a few residents ran away but after a while, a group of more than 30 people started running towards us. As I was the last among the policemen who were trying to run towards the railway station, I got hit by one of the knives on my leg.As soon as i reached Ulhasnagar railway station I tried looking out for railway police but as no one was in sight and the crowd was nearing, I started taking the stairs but beacuse of the knife injury I kept slipping. I got into the Ambernath local that was about to leave the station, as I could not balance myself, my right leg hit the door while boarding."
The deceased, Sashikant Gaikwad, 25, had passed some vulgar comment to a girl during Maghi Ganeshotsav celebrations in Samta Colony. This led to a heated arguement between Gaikwad and his friends.
Elders in the colony had to intervene to resolve the situation, but to take revenge his friends cornered him near Ulhasnagar railway station's ticket counter on 13 Febraury at noon. They started beating him up, Gaikwad was severely injured as few of them had some weapons as well. He was immediately rushed to Central Hospital where they asked him to be shifted to Sion hospital.
