Cop hurt while trying to stop triple-seat driving

A constable from Byculla police station was injured on Sunday during a nakabandi drive near the zoo when he tried to stop a bike with three people on it. The youth driving the bike accidentally hit the constable in the stomach and ran the bike over his leg while trying to escape.

According to Byculla police, a team of officers were carrying out naka bandi outside the Veermata Jijabai Udyaan from 1 am to 3 am on Sunday. At around 2.30 am, a Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle numbered MH02/CY /9628 came towards the naka bandi point with three people riding on it. Constable Srirang Lagugude who was on duty as the driver of the police van on duty tried stopping them. The arrested accused Sohail Zakir Ali, 19, in an attempt to escape from the police accelerated his vehicle and dashed into Lagugude, who suffered minor injuries on his leg and stomach. The other policemen on duty immediately rushed to stop the bike and took the accused in custody.

"Lagugude was taken to JJ hospital and discharged after treatment, We have arrested Ali and booked him under relevant sections of Motor Vehicles Act," said an officer from Byculla police station.
