A police constable attached to Juhu station died after falling from the roof of a yard while chasing a juvenile criminal, who had managed to escape from his custody at Matunga, on Saturday. The deceased was escorting the accused to children's remand home when the unfortunate incident took place.

According to Shahu Nagar police, the deceased, Rajendra Naik, 42, died after falling down from the 25-ft high roof of a railway yard in Matunga. Naik was escorting a juvenile under-trial to a children's remand home. Around 4:30pm, the accused escaped from Naik's custody. When Naik chased him, the young boy swiftly climbed on to the roof of the yard and the 42-year-old Naik too climbed on to the roof.

"Naik who got on to the roof and chased the accused lost his balance due to his heavy frame and came crashing down, fell and died. The accused in the meantime managed to escape from the spot," said an officer in Shahu Nagar police station.

The 16-year-old accused whom Naik was escorting, had been arrested in a case of assault that took place at Nehru Nagar slums in Juhu, and as per police procedure, was being taken to the children's home. The mode of transportation used by Naik to escort the juvenile accused is however not yet clear. "We have not found any police vehicle at the spot and believe that he was been escorted in some public transport vehicle," said an officer in Shahu Nagar police station.

It was Railway Protection Force (RPF) officials who informed the Shahu Nagar police about the incident. Naik was rushed to Sion hospital where he was declared "dead before admission". Naik is survived by wife and two children. The police have registered a case of accidental death.
