There was panic at the Gateway of India near Taj Mahal Palace Hotel on Tuesday morning when a gunshot was heard in the area. However, fears were soon allayed when it became clear that a police constable with the Quick Response Team had accidentally fired his service revolver.

According to sources, the incident took place around 9 am on Tuesday when a gunshot was heard from the patrolling van, causing tension in the area for a while. Policemen patrolling the area rushed to the spot, only to find that a shot had accidentally been fired by a constable while he was cleaning his service revolver. The 24-year-old constable had shot himself in his palm, and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The Colaba Police have taken serious note of the incident. A similar incident took place near the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel during the visit of former US President Barack Obama's visit to the city in 2015. A policeman had accidentally fired his service revolver while on duty in the area.
