Convicted Nigerian drug peddler who fled from police custody nabbed

Around 2 am on January 2, Imeka slipped ​custody ​when he was kept at the Azad Maidan unit’s passage without handcuffs.

The Nigerian national who had escaped from police custody in the wee hours of January 2 from ​the ​Anti Narcotics Cell’s (ANC) Azad Maidan Unit, was held at Kandivali on Thursday morning. The foreigner identified as John Kennedy Chukowa Imeka​,​ was brought from Nasik prison after completing three​-​years ​of ​ imprisonment ​in a drug peddling case. Imeka was brought to Mumbai for the completion of his deportation procedures. 18 teams of ANC officers were formed for the manhunt of Imeka.

​The Kandivali unit of ANC ​finally ​nabbed him ​after a tip off. Speaking about the trail, a senior officer from the ANC said, “After he escaped custody, he went to Nerul, Navi Mumbai ​to his friend's ​house. ​He ​then ​kept moving from one place to another. He wanted to move out of the state to avoid deportation, hence, he was planning to go to Bengaluru before our team nabbed him.” Imeka was produced in the Killa court, Azad Maidan on Friday and sent to Judicial Custody till January 13. The Azad Maidan police station had registered an offense under section 224

​Around 2 am on January 2, Imeka slipped ​custody ​when he was kept at the Azad Maidan unit’s passage without handcuffs. A constable was ​supposed to keep a watch on Imeka. However, Imeka jumped from the first floor of the unit, landed on the roof of the unit’s ground floor office and fled.

According to the police, Imeka was arrested from Masjid Bandar for smuggling 40 grams of cocaine in 2014 and was sentenced ​to ​three years imprisonment ​in ​same year along with a fine of Rs 5,000. Imeka was lodged in Nasik Jail. His conviction completed on December 21.
