In the wake of strong objections, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday scrapped the controversial proposed draft of development plan (DP) - 2034 Mumbai. The state government has ordered the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to prepare a new Development Plan.

Addressing a press conference after a cabinet meeting, Fadnavis said the government has directed the civic body to rework on the DP and rectify the mistakes.

"The DP in its present form was not acceptable due to the mistakes that were seen in it," he said.

Fadnavis said the committee headed by Chief Secretary was asked to suggest whether to give a two-month extension to the existing DP for inviting suggestions and objections or ask the BMC to make a new DP and republish it.

The plan had been embroiled in controversy ever since it was announced. The blueprint was also criticised by all party legislators in the Maharashtra state assembly.

Residents across the city were irked at civic authorities' acute myopia, and believed the DP's flagrant errors are a result of a gross lack of knowledge on the part of the civic officials.

The new DP 2034 was also criticised for converting Mumbai's 17,000 acres of non-development zone land into development. New DP had also proposed to omit 1000 heritage structures and sites from the heritage stag list.

Voicing strong opposition to Mumbai civic body's new development plan for the metropolis, MNS chief Raj Thackeray had alleged that attempts are being made to sell Mumbai inch by inch and development is being brought at the cost of Marathi-speaking people.

He had warned that his party would not let Mumbai be sold in the name of development.

Earlier, Fadnavis himself had admitted that there were many complains of irregularities in the draft development plan (DP) of Mumbai and had announced the setting up of a committee to check gross irregularities in the proposed draft development plan-2034.
