The state government on Thursday appointed controversial IPS officer Sunil Paraskar as the additional commissioner of police (traffic) after he was reinstated in the force following his discharge by a local court last year from a rape case filed against him. A 29-year-old model had filed the rape case against the senior police officer, after which he was suspended from the force.

The post of additional commissioner of police (traffic) fell vacant over a month ago.

Paraskar was embroiled in controversy after the model alleged that he had raped her in 2013. She alleged that she came in contact with Paraskar in 2013 in connection to a case, when Paraskar was posted as additional commissioner of police (north region). They exchanged numbers, after which they kept in touch. She also alleged in her complaint that Paraskar had taken her to his flat in Nerul, where he allegedly sexually assaulted her. The complainant also claimed that Paraskar had taken her to a bungalow in Madh Island where he raped her for a second time. Following the complaint, an FIR was lodged against the officer in 2014 and the investigation was handed over to the Mumbai crime branch. Meanwhile, the state government placed Parasakar under suspension.

The crime branch, after completing the investigation, filed a 724-page charge sheet against the officer in May 2015. But, in December last year, the local court dropped all the charges against Paraskar.
