Constable held for murdering labourer at MIDC

According to the police, the incident took place on Wednesday night when Shirke and labourer Mohammad Ali Ahmed Ali Khan (42), a resident of MIDC, started arguing over a trivial issue.

A constable posted with the local arms department of the city police was arrested on charges of murdering a labourer by the MIDC police on Friday. The accused was identified as Laxman Shirke (47), a resident of police quarters at MIDC.

According to the police, the incident took place on Wednesday night when Shirke and labourer Mohammad Ali Ahmed Ali Khan (42), a resident of MIDC, started arguing over a trivial issue. The argument turned violent and Shirke allegedly bashed up Khan. He then left the spot, leaving a severely injured Khan behind.

"A few locals, who also recognised the constable, informed Khan's family. Khan was rushed to Nair Hospital. He had sustained severe injuries to his head and chest, and succumbed to these on Thursday morning. A case of murder was then registered against Shirke," said an MIDC police officer. He added that Shirke was on sick leave when the police nabbed him.?
