While most policemen may have heaved a sigh of relief after civic election results were announced on Thursday, officers across six police stations were on a hunt to locate a constable who had gone missing from election bandobast duty after threatening to commit suicide owing to 'personal reasons'.

The six police stations — Chembur, Mankhurd, Govandi, Deonar, MIDC and Powai — were put on the job after the police control room received a call about a constable, with Chembur police station, having gone missing after calling his brother to say that he was going to commit suicide.

The constable, however, surfaced within 24 hours, and a departmental enquiry has been initiated.

According to police, constable Shashank Deodhar, sounded low when he called his brother, Sachin, and told him to take care of his family and disconnected the call. The call left Sachin stunned. The brother tried calling the constable back on his phone, but it was switched off.

The constable's brother immediately informed his family and the police control room about the call. An alert was sounded and Chembur, MIDC and Powai police stations were asked to trace Deodhar.

A team started tracking Deodhar's phone location, but failed to make headway. Deodhar's phone was last traced to Marol.

While the teams fanned out to trace the missing constable, he resurfaced on Friday morning at Chembur police station, and joined duty as if nothing had ever happened.

"He (Deodhar) was quiet and said nothing. Deodhar said he was working through personal issues. We counselled him thereafter," said an officer.
