In another case of cyber fraud, a caller posing as a bank executive duped a 45-year-old woman by fraudulently obtaining her bank details and changing her registered email ID and mobile number to siphon off Rs 3 lakh.

In her complaint, Zankana Doshi told Mulund police that she received a phone call from a man who posed as a representative of the bank she has an account with. The caller said the bank was in the process of issuing new debit cards to customers. He further added that in order to replace the old cards with new ones, the bank has advised card holders to desist from using their cards. The caller also said the old cards would be blocked.

An unsuspecting Doshi revealed her account details to the caller, who claimed that the new card would be delivered in 10 days. "After gaining the victim's trust, the caller obtained her customer ID, PIN number and One Time Password (OTP) on the pretext of issuing a new debit card. He also replaced her registered e-mail ID and mobile number with his own details to ensure the victim would not get an alert from the bank regarding account-related activities," said an officer.

"The victim realised she had been duped when she inquired with the bank. Doshi was told that the bank had not issued new cards to customers. Soon after, she registered a case with Mulund police. We are investigating further," said Gangaram Vhanmane, Senior Police Inspector of Mulund Police Station.

"The caller was a thorough professional. I did not suspect him to dupe me," Doshi said.

"Despite directing citizens to avoid sharing their banking details with strangers, they continue to do so. Cyber fraudsters will continue to employ new tricks to dupe people. It is difficult to catch them as they use caller ID spoofing techniques by calling from a number that does not belong to them," said a cyber expert.
