The Gamdevi police have arrested a man from Haryana for allegedly duping a senior-citizen couple to the tune of Rs3.32 lakh, claiming that a bonus dividend has been declared on their matured policy and, in order to claim the dividend, they would have to invest in another policy and take a holiday package.

The arrested person has been identified as Sumeet Amarjeet Suhag (25).

According to the police, a few months ago, the victims received a phone call from an unknown person and the caller told them that the bonus dividend has been declared on their matured policies and they would have to invest in another policy and take a holiday package to claim the dividend.

"The unsuspecting couple then deposited Rs 1.6lakh and Rs 1.72lakh in the bank account provided by the caller. The caller had told the victim that their dividend would be approved in a couple of days. Later, the caller again asked the victims to deposit more money. This time, the victims suspected something foul and lodged a police complaint," said an officer from Gamdevi police station.

The police probe revealed that the account in which the money had been deposited by the couple was opened with bogus documents. Also, the mobile number used by the caller was procured on the basis of bogus documents as well.

Meanwhile, the caller had stopped calling the victims for more money. "Earlier this month, the accused again called the victims and told them to buy more policies to claim dividends and gave them a new bank account number.

The victims then shared these details with the police and, on the basis of technical intelligence, we nabbed the accused from Bhiwani in Haryana," said assistant police inspector Shyamrao Patil from Gamdevi police station.
