With elections around the corner, Congress MPs in the city have demanded that Reliance Energy reduces electricity tariffs in the suburbs.

On Monday, Congress North MP Sanjay Nirupam and North Central MP Priya Dutt led a morcha to Reliance Energy office at Kandivli near SV Raod seeking reduction of the energy tariff especially fixed charges and regulatory asset charges and even taxes such as the operating tax and also uniform electricity charges in Mumbai.

Nirupam had demanded that Reliance Energy MD Anil Ambani himself be present at the protest to address the public and explain the company’s stand. The Congress MPs addressed the gathering, shouted slogans against Ambani and moved towards the office of Reliance Energy.

A large posse of policemen prevented them from going inside the Reliance Energy office.

Kandivli MLA Rameshsingh Thakur went inside to meet senior officials of Reliance Energy. Later, he was joined by Malwani MLA Aslam Shaikh and Vile Parle MLA Krishna Hegde.

Addressing the gathering, North Central MP Priya Dutta said the suburbs were discriminated against and even the property taxes were higher and the people had to pay more taxes.

Demanding uniform tariff, she pointed out that the BEST tariffs were lesser than the Reliance Energy. “We met Reliance Energy officials including RR Mehta, Debashish Banerjee, Srinath Kashi and other vice-presidents. They assured us that they would put the demands before the state government within the 24 hours. We will also replace the defective meters, if a list of the defective names are given to the company,” said Hegde, threatening to stage a ‘chakka jam’.

“We are not satisfied with the response of the company and Congress MLAs will also come together and organise another morcha on January 20th or 21st or a ‘chakka’ jam’,” he added.

Some of the demands include scrapping of the fixed charge of Rs100 per bill and regulatory asset charge of Rs600 for consumption of over 500 units towards infrastructure and replacement of defective electronic meters imported from China.
