The Congress will be launching its ‘Vachanpurti Janjagran Yatra’ from Panvel on Saturday, in an attempt to gear up for the upcoming Parliamentary elections. Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Manikrao Thakre will be present at the yatra.

The yatra is aimed at creating awareness about the various welfare schemes implemented by the party in the past after it promised those in its election manifesto.

According to some political observers, “The Congress has been compelled to carry out such a yatra as it has been caught in an awkward position owing to its alleged involvement in the 2G, Commonwealth games and the coal scam. Also, rising inflation and a discouraging economic scenario have pushed the UPA government at the Centre and the state government to the brink.

The yatra is also aimed at countering Narendra Modi — BJP’s prime ministerial candidate.”

“This yatra is to make people aware about the highlights of the UPA government and various welfare schemes like the Rajeev Gandhi Jeevandayi Yojana, concessions for senior citizens, RTI Act, Aadhaar card scheme, direct cash transfer to the account of beneficiary, few among which are currently being implemented in the country,” said a Congress leader from Panvel.

The yatra will be held in three phases in Raigad district. In will be held from October 27-30 in Panvel, while in Uran it will be held on October 31. In the second and third phases, it will be held in other parts of Raigad district.

Panvel has been chosen as the location, because it has been a lucky mascot for the party. The assembly seat was with PWP for last 50 years, however, during the last elections, the Congress was able to win this seat from PWP and the party hopes to repeat the same feat everywhere in the country during coming elections.
