Ridiculing the demand for 144 assembly seats by the Sharad Pawar-led NCP, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Tuesday made it clear that the Congress was firm on its stand of giving 124 to the ally, which is 10 more than their 2009 arrangement.

Chavan said his party's was position was logical as NCP had left ten seats for them during 2009 state polls after the Congress bagged double the seats than the latter during that year's Lok Sabha elections.

"In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, NCP won four seats which is twice that what Congress got. In such a situation, how many seats should we leave for them for assembly elections? We have proposed 124 seats for NCP," said Chavan, addressing a press conference at Tilak Bhavan.

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee chief Manikrao Thakre said that their party had taken two steps further to ensure that the alliance with NCP was intact and now it was the ally's turn to respond in equal measure. "We should not be blamed if the parties do not remain united."

When asked about reports of three proposals made by the NCP, Chavan said such things cannot be disclosed at this juncture. "I will not talk on figures and there is nothing final in politics. We will discuss at two to three levels, including exchanging a few seats. This much I can tell you now."

Chavan said that he had talked to Samajwadi Party leaders and that his senior colleagues from Delhi were in touch with the latter. Thakre said that it was Congress's tradition to take along with it all like-minded parties.
Regarding Narayan Rane's announcement in Nashik that the NCP has submitted proposals, including sharing the CM's chair, both Chavan and Thakre refrained from commenting on the issue.
