Exuding confidence, Congress state unit president Ashok Chavan on Friday said the results of the Bandra bypoll would show that his party, and not the AIMIM, is the real alternative to the ruling BJP and Shiv Sena in the state. The Congress has fielded senior partyman Narayan Rane for the April 11 contest.

On the side light of a party function at Gandhi Bhavan, Chavan said, "AIMIM doesn't exist across the state and people have understood that it can't be an alternative." He said Rane, who is a former CM, has huge experience and is quite popular in Bandra (east). "All state leaders, including me, would campaign for Rane."

Attacking the BJP governments at the Centre and the state, Chavan said that both had failed to deliver on all grounds. All the promises, Chavan said, "have proved to be hollow and the central government is facing problems in passage of important legislations like the Land Acquisition Bill in Parliament."

He said the story is the same in Maharashtra, where the Fadnavis-led government had failed to pass on the benefits of the Food Security Bill to lakhs of people. "The state government has deprived Muslims in the state of reservation benefits and has kept pending the development plan of Mumbai city."
