The Congress and NCP on Wednesday demanded in the Legislative Council that the Shiv Sena-BJP-ruled Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) be dissolved for "corruption".

NCP member Sunil Tatkare demanded a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe and a Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) audit in the contracts awarded for de-silting of storm water drains, road signals, junction repairs, road repairs and disposal of debris.

Congress member Sharad Ranpise cited section 520 (D) of the BMC Act, 1888 (amended in 1998), which provides for dissolution of the civic body for gross irregularities.

Replying to questions raised by the Opposition, minister of state for urban development Ranjit Patil said the investigation in some contracts was over, while in some, the report was awaited. He added that 13 civic employees were suspended following the adverse reports. Patil also said the case has been marked to the Economic Offence Wing (EOW) for further probe.

His response failed to satisfy the Opposition members, who continued to press for their demand of BMC's dissolution. Considering the sentiments of the members, Council chairman Ramraje Nimbalkar reserved the issue and directed chief minister Devendra Fadnavis to make a detailed statement on the same.
