Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis revealed that it was in fact the Congress deputy leader in the House Vijay Wadettiwar who had given the resolution for creating a separate Vidarbha state and it was NCP leader Praful Patel who had supported the demand for a separate Vidarbha.

The state legislative assembly was adjourned six times after pandemonium and demonstrations by opposition over Vidarbha issue. Fadnavis in his statement before the state assembly alleged that NCP leader Praful Patel had backed the demand for separate Vidarbha state only a day before. He added that if supporting Vidarbha was anti-Maharashtra then there were six other MLAs including Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar who had given the resolution for a separate Vidarbha state.

Reminding the opposition that BJP and Shiv Sena were ruling the state because of people's mandate, Fadnavis said that, it was not for Jayant Patil but for people of the state to evaluate his government. He added that it was the jurisdiction of the union government to create a state, and if any MLA or legislature had an opinion in favor of creating smaller states, it shouldn't be looked upon as an anti-state feeling. Fadnavis also told Shiv Sena MLA Sunil Prabhu that making a demand to suspend an MLA for that reason was unconstitutional, since MLA has the right to express his views even if it is in favor of creating smaller states.

Earlier, the leader of opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil had criticised the government by pointing out that the chief minister was silent when BJP president Raosaheb Danve spoke of creating Vidarbha state. NCP leader Jayant Patil said that Shiv Sena was exposed when they turned their caps after the Chief Minister's statement. Sena MLA Sunil Prabhu said that Chief Minister's statement does not clarify whether he was in favor of united Maharashtra or against it. Prabhu also demanded that the MLAs who openly supported creating separate Vidarbha should be suspended.

The chief minister however, made it clear that his government did not have any proposal before it for the formation of a separate Vidarbha state. He said that, even though BJP has always been in favor of creating smaller states and Shiv Sena being in favor of united Maharashtra, there was no proposal whatsoever in that regard. He added that neither the government, nor the cabinet had discussed on the issue of a separate Vidarbha state, and so it was improper to discuss an issue which was not even before the House.
