Questioning the reason Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was shielding Minister of State for Home Ranjit Patil, the Congress on Monday demanded the latter's resignation. Party spokesperson Sachin Savant also sought an inquiry into the appointment of staff at Patil's office who was found involved in an alleged bribery case and those for whom the rules of appointment were allegedly flouted.

Addressing a press conference, Savant said that when Patil's secretary Milind Kadam was caught red-handed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau, accepting a bribe of Rs5 lakh, Patil had said Kadam was never his personal secretary or officer on special duty or personal assistant. Savant, on Monday, distributed copies of letters which showed that Kadam was send on deputation to work for Patil.

The letter, said to have been issued by Patil himself, gives details of his staff and their responsibilities, allegedly showing that Kadam was working for Patil. Savant also said that it was Fadnavis and Patil who, after Kadam's arrest, had claimed that the CM himself asked for Kadam to be caught red-handed so that the common man would not be harassed by any official. Savant questioned if Fadnavis would take action against Patil for "hiding the truth".

He also questioned the appointment of Deepak Kasar and pointed out that the norm of furnishing details of confidential reports of the last five years while appointing personal staff to a minister was flouted in Kasar's case. Savant alleged that even Fadnavis made an exception for Kasar while granting his appointment, and demanded a detailed inquiry from an outside agency into it as well as Patil's statements after his staff was caught.
