Speaking to media persons, Chavan said that it was the previous Congress government which provided reservation benefits to Muslims.
Criticizing the Devendra Fadnavis led BJP-Shiv Sena government for being run on the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh orders, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President Ashok Chavan on Friday cautioned that Congress would take to the streets for pressing the demands of reservation to the Maratha and Muslim communities.
Speaking to media persons, Chavan said that it was the previous Congress government which provided reservation benefits to Muslims. He pointed out that after the 2-day BJP state executive meeting in Mumbai, BJP state unit president Raosaheb Danve made it clear that BJP was against any reservation to be granted on the basis of religion. Chavan said that on one hand Prime Minister Narendra Modi was preaching of equal treatment to all religions and on the other hand Danve is opposing reservation to the Muslim community which was given by the Congress on the basis of its backward status.
Stating that the Fadnavis Government was never serious about the Maratha reservation issue, Chavan said that RSS was opposed to reservation and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat made public statements on this matter. Chavan who is also former Chief Minister said that if at all BJP is serious about Maratha reservation, they would have taken steps for the same since they have their own Government at the Centre and in the state. Instead, the BJP has just passed a resolution in its executive meeting so that the issue does not hamper BJP prospects in ensuing local body elections.
Chavan said that despite the silent marches evoking great response by the Maratha community the state Government has not moved an inch on this issue. Chief Minister Fadnavis has been trying to mislead both the Maratha and Muslim communities by making false promises.
