Commuters travelling from Kandivli station towards the Kandivli East subway have to face traffic congestion on a daily basis. Many commuters try to avoid the congestion by taking the no-entry route. However, more often than not, that increases the traffic problems.

More than two traffic wardens are deployed at the subway to make sure that the commuters do not break any rules. "As there are many schools in the vicinity, there is a lot of traffic during the school hours, and also before and after that, as many school buses travel on the same route. Another major bottleneck on the same route is near Mahindra and Sai Baba temple. During morning and evening peak hours, a huge traffic problem is faced by the commuters," said one of the traffic guards at the spot, who was handling traffic below the Western Urban Highway subway near Kandivli station.

A daily commuter on the route, Swapnil Parab, 37, said: "Because of the congestion, it takes more than 20-25 minutes to cross the road via the subway. There are barricades placed in between the road so that the commuters don't jump the line. Many rickshaws try to overtake to avoid the queue of vehicles."

Having to bear the brunt of traffic snarls, over six months ago, residents from the area had come on the streets to tackle the traffic issues in their own way. They stood with placards and tried making commuters understand the issue.

Shishir Shetty, co-founder of Lokhandwala Residents Association (LRA), said: "As residents, we have been following up with the traffic authority to resolve the problems. Even though a 'no right turn' board has been installed at Sambhaji Nagar Chowk, no one follows the rules. Double-side parking of trucks, private taxis and cars also add to the problems."
