Over 3 lakh aspirants who would take the Maharashtra state common entrance test (MH CET) for engineering courses in 2018 are left in a lurch as the government is yet to decide on the paper pattern of the exam.

In March 2017, the department of higher and technical education had issued a GR announcing the change in the pattern of the MHT CET from 2018 to make it at par with the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE). As per the resolution, the state had also asked the Maharashtra Board of School and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) to make efforts to upgrade their curriculum in class XII. Following the decision, officials at the state board and the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) along with officials of the government met in the month of August.

A government circular released soon clarified that there would be no negative marking for the exam and stated that the exam would give 30 per cent weightage to class XI syllabus and 70 per cent for class XII, unlike the previous years where only class XII syllabus was given 100 per cent weightage. However, almost two months after the circular, the state government is yet to announce an official pattern for the exam leaving students and parents anxious.

"We are still not clear as to what will be covered in the class XI syllabus. Students who appear for such a competitive exam should know the syllabus at least a year in advance. Why the hurry to implement it from 2018 if the groundwork is not done" asked Gauri Chaudhary, one of the aspirants' parent.

Dayanand Meshram, Joint Director DTE said "The government is yet to notify us about what its final stand is on the issue. Once it comes, students would be informed about the same on the official website".
