In addition to putting up a banner praising Nathuram Godse, a businessman has demanded that he be declared a national hero for killing Mahatma Gandhi. On the banner, he compares Godse with Arjuna from the Mahabharata, saying that a belief in ideologies and vows are important, and blames Gandhi for dividing the nation. Earlier this week, BJP's Sakshi Maharaj passed a controversial statement on Godse, creating an uproar in Parliament.

The businessman, Jayesh Mehta, put up a big banner outside his office on the Nalasopara-Vasai link road, praising Godse, and even printed the latter's last speech.

About the assassin, Mehta say: "Godse is a martyr. If he had not killed Gandhi, the nation would be killed."

Terming his act as a sign of respect for Godse, Mehta said that the union government should declare him a national hero, instead of criticizing his act. "We praise Arjuna despite the fact that he killed his own brother, then why should Godse not be praised?," asks the Vasai resident.

Blaming Gandhi for dividing the nation and creating a rift between Hindus and Muslims, he added: "I respect Gandhi, but he tried to coax everyone with his ideologies. I demand that the BJP government declare Godse a hero, or call him a martyr."

When asked whether the controversial statement of Unnao MP Sakshi Maharaj inspired him to take such a step, Mehta said: "I have been praising Godse since a very long time as I believe that the steps he had taken was in favour of the nation. Though Gandhi selflessly worked for freedom, Godse too worked for independence. I have great respect for both of them, and I do not care what Sakshi Maharaj has spoken about."

MP Sakshi Maharaj praised Nathuram Godse and called him a 'patriot', but later apologized in Parliament after the opposition slammed him for the comments.
