Commuters help woman deliver baby on local train

It was a “happy and wonderful moment” for a pregnant 25-year-old Nalasopara resident, who was on her way to Kasturba hospital, when she ended up delivering her baby in the local train itself. The train had to be halted at Vasai station for 25 minutes.

On Wednesday, Poonam Singh, who was travelling in the first class compartment of a Virar-Dadar local with her mother-in-law, went into labour when the train was between Nalasopara and Vasai. However, she didn’t have to look far for help as the other commuters came to her aid and helped her deliver the baby. Among them was Rony Baby, a nurse from SevenHills Hospital who was in-charge during the birth of actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s daughter.

She said, “It was like a mission for all of us. (When the train reached Vasai) we sent a few women to inform the motorman to keep the train halted at the station. Singh gave birth to a healthy baby girl.”

“As soon as the girl was born, an announcement was made about the birth and all the commuters in the train cheered. The woman was then rushed to a private hospital,” Rony Baby added.

“No commuter complained about the delay; everyone was very cooperative during that time. I am happy I got an opportunity to help the woman.”

Singh said, “No one complained about having to wait when the delivery was underway.”
“I am grateful to Rony Baby and all the commuters and also to the motorman. I am happy I have given birth to a girl,” she added.
