As a confidence-building measure among citizens, police commissioner Ahmad Javed had his first interactive twitter session with Mumbaikars on Friday. During the 30-minute session, the commissioner listened to the grievances of citizens and assured them of immediate and satisfactory measures.

Within a few days after the Mumbai police and the commissioner made their debut on twitter, Javed fielded questions ranging from personnel's lethargy in filing police complaints to seeking an update on multi-crore economic offences being investigated by the department.

Javed, who was online for half an hour from 4pm, was flooded with questions on the status of the probe in Rs5,600 crore National Spot Exchange Limited (NSEL) scam, being investigated by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai police.

A twitter handle by the name @patriotcheated raised suspicion over the time taken by EOW to finish the probe. Javed replied saying the police were doing their work professionally and would bring the culprit to book. Another twitter handle @1kadum raised the issues of ill-equipped force and a shortage of breath analysers, resulting in health issues for the policemen carrying out checks in the city. Javed tweeted back stating all measures will be taken to ensure the health of the police force.

Some citizens brought to notice issues such as tinted glasses not removed from the cars of VIPs in the city, while the common man being fined for the offence. They also informed the commissioner about the traffic inconvenience caused by the nakabandi carried out in the city and the rising drug menace. One of the prime concerns raised by many women was about their safety. In response, Javed assured that safety of women was Mumbai police's top priority and informed the citizens about the presence of a woman cell in every police station.

Javed also used the opportunity to urge the citizens to be more alert, and support the Mumbai police to keep the city safe. He gave out various helpline number operational for senior citizens, women and children. While addressing a query on child abuse, Javed urged that even the smallest of incidents should be reported to the nearest police station and he would ensure that the cops acted on the complaint. Javed also urged Mumbaikars to use twitter as a medium of communication to convey their grievances and suggestions to Mumbai police.
