Mumbai has over 1.5 million senior citizens, but open spaces available to them in the city have been dwindling over the years. Gone are the days that senior citizens would sit in parks looking at their grand children play before them. In a joint initiative, NGO My Dream Colaba, and the Colaba Advance Locality Management (ALM) will on December 16 inaugurate an open air gym for senior citizens.

The gym will be open for senior citizen as per the Bombay Port Trust garden timings. The senior citizens will not need membership for accessing the gym, neither would they need to pay any fees for it. The gym is equipped with pulley drives, peddlers, flexbars, mini steppers, among other fitness equipment.

Advocate Makarand S Narwekar, corporator of Colaba ward, who has been supporting the ALM and whose brainchild the initiative is said, “The BPT Garden is usually used by senior citizens, and while I was traveling abroad, I saw this concept of senior parks which are widely accepted and used by them.

Besides, the city has so many spaces for young adults to exercise, but the right to fitness is not given to senior citizens.”

“The life quality of senior citizens is an issue that needs to be addressed immediately. Motor movements at this age starts giving up. The only practical way to ensure that the issue is addressed is to exercise. Hence, I thought of this idea which was accepted by a reputed telecom company who funded 16 lakh rupees for this project,” Narwekar added.

Speaking about the importance of maintaining the mental and physical health of senior citizens, Sailesh Mishra, founder of Silver Innings, an NGO that works towards the betterment of senior citizens said, “India seldom has elderly-friendly spaces. How does one encourage them towards better health? This is an initiative that encourages and inspires the elderly to have a better quality of life even after 60. The government should take it up as a part of their plannings to benefit the elderly to reclaim open spaces.”
