The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will ensure that in 2016, you welcome Ganpati Bappa in a spic and span city. The civic body has planned to implement 'Zero Garbage' during Festival project, under which it will lift garbage 24x7 during the Ganesh festival. Special focus will be near big pandals, gatherings and fairs.

Municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta has given strict orders to the Solid Waste Management (SWM) department to execute zero garbage project in the city stringently during the festivals. The assistant municipal commissioners of 24 wards have been given directions. Mehta has cautioned the SWM department about the threat of mosquitoes. With the cases of malaria and dengue on a rise, the civic body doesn't want to take chances on any account.

"The municipal commissioner wanted the city to be clean during the festival days. It has been observed that the city generates at least 20–30% more garbage during festivals – especially during the 10-day Ganeshotsav. We have increased the number of trips to lift garbage," said deputy municipal commissioner Vijay Balamwar.

Balamwar further said that it has been observed that the Ganapati pandals have celebrations in the evening. At times, snacks, dinner and other refreshments are served. Also, fairs and other gatherings are organised during the festive season, which generate even more garbage.

This garbage generated from the pandals is accumulated till the civic vans come in the morning. This attracts pests and leads to foul smell in the area. "It is estimated that at least 20–30% more garbage is generated during festivals, compared to other days. So, we have planned to deploy the garbage lifting service at night as well," Balamwar added.
