With an aim to make the younger generation aware of the Urdu culture through the historic buildings, Urdu Markaz, an organisation that works for the promotion of the language and the culture in collaboration with the Centre for Study of Society and Secularism (CSSS) will organise a cultural walk for college students on December 10.

The cultural walk will commence at Urdu Markaz chowk and conclude at Nagpada to show youngsters the evolution of Urdu culture in the bylanes of Bhendi Bazar to Nagpada.

Stressing on the importance of the area and its cultural significance, Zubair Azmi, director of the Urdu Markaz, said, "These areas have seen the evolution of Urdu writers, poets and gazals who made Bhendi Bazar a centre for Urdu literature. During the cultural walk, students will visit the house of legendary Urdu poet Sadat Hasan Manto and Jan Nisar Akhtar, father of Javed Akhtar. A few decades ago, the famous Shalimar restaurant which replaced Wazir Hotel was a cultural hub for Urdu poets."

The highlights of the cultural walk will include Maktaba-e-Jamia, publisher of books of Jamia University and one of the first bookstores in the area, the erstwhile Wazir hotel and Cafe Khushali where Urdu stalwarts like Manto and Jaan Nisar Akhtar formed couplets while sipping black tea.

With the aim to foster unity among different communities, the organisation holds the cultural walk every year with 10 colleges from across the city having participated in it so far. This year, a college from Dharavi will be participating.

"The students belong to various communities. Through this walk, they will not only learn about the Urdu culture, it will also help strengthen the bond of unity and harmony among students by learning of other cultures," said Azmi.
