Staring May a bench of Maharashtra Human Rights Commission (MHRC ) will reach out to those seeking justice in various districts of the state by holding three day-long sessions. These sessions would be held in each revenue district of the state. The sessions have been divided into three parts, day one would be kept for hearing of cases, day two for sensitization of the public servants, particularly policemen and day three would be an awareness workshop for general public and law students on the human rights act.

Sources in the commission said that a meeting of all the divisional commissioners has already been called on April 18th to discuss and finalize the calendar.

"As per the Protection of Human Rights Act this institution is created to give speedy and cost free remedies to the victims of violation of human rights by the public servant. As such the MHRC has decided to hold one sitting at each revenue district of the state," said a senior officer. The districts where the workshop would be held include Pune, Amravati, Aurangabad, Nashik, Konkan and Nagpur.

Sources said the idea behind holding the general awareness camp for public is to ensure that they learn about their human rights and also to tell them that the act can only be used against public servants. "Upto 70 per cent cases that we receive here are of domestic violence, matrimonial discords etc which we are not entitled to handle," the officer added.

However the most interesting aspect of the workshop would be the sensitization drive with public servants, particularly policemen, towards human rights. Sources said upto 90 percent complaints are field against the policemen who often misuse their powers and hence violate human rights of citizens. "These cases are even more frequent in rural districts which do not have active media. Also, not all villagers know about human rights or can afford to come to Mumbai to file a case," the officer said.

Sources in commission claimed that as per the tentative plan the first sitting is likely to take place in Kohlapur in May. This sitting would take up cases from smaller places around such as Sangli and Satara too.
