Two engineers were killed and three of their friends were left critically injured after the car they were travelling in rammed into an illegally parked truck on Link Road in Borivli (W). Police suspect that the deceased driver of the Hyundai i20, Bhupendra Velankar 24, was under the influence of alcohol. The other deceased, Kausthup Dhotre, 29, was seated next to him.

According to the police, the incident happened early on Sunday, at 5am when the five were on their way from Dahisar to Borivli (W), where all of them resided. The group had gone an all-night drive across the city. The police suspect that the car was speeding and the driver lost control of the vehicle, before hitting the rear of the truck that was parked in Ganpat Patil Nagar at gulli no 2 on Link Road near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Polytechnic College.
B Kolekar, PSI of MHB Colony police station, said: "We are collecting the blood samples to ascertain if it was a case of drunken driving. According to one of the injured, the driver was drunk."

The officials added that while Dhotre died on the spot, Velankar died while undergoing treatment at Shatabdi Hospital.

The car's damage was so severe, that a crane was needed to pull out the bodies. "The truck was parked beside another truck. Since double parking is illegal, we will be taking action against the truck's driver as well."

The injured are Vaibhav Jadhav, 28, Mihir Revankar, 26, and Amit Kamble, 31. While Kamble's condition is out of danger, the other two are critical and are admitted in Shatabdi Hospital.

A case has been registered under IPC Sections 279 (rash driving) 304 A (causing death due to negligence) and 338 (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) against the deceased driver by the MHB Colony police.

Dhotre, who worked in the US, had recently come down to the city and was having a get together with the four – his childhood friends.
