The Dadar police have arrested a 19-year-old collegian for allegedly sending obscene photos via WhatsApp messenging service to a girl, a roommate of the accused's girlfriend. The police said the accused had allegedly sent the photos assuming the victim was responsible for ruining his relationship with his girlfriend.

The teenager, Aniket Dutta, got in touch with a former schoolmate through a social networking site earlier this year. The girl had left the Delhi school they studied together in after Std IV and was studying hotel management in Mumbai. The two soon grew close and started chatting regularly.

"In Mumbai, Dutta's girlfriend lived in a rented accommodation with a roommate. At times, when she was short on balance on phone, she would use her roommate's phone to call Dutta. That's how he got acquainted with the roommate," said an officer.

Sometime ago, Dutta had an argument with his girlfriend after she learnt that he had falsely claimed of receiving air force training, and she stopped answering his calls. On March 19, the girlfriend's roommate lodged a complaint with the police saying she received obscene pictures the previous day on her phone from Dutta's number.

"Dutta was arrested from Dadar. It appears he suspected the roommate to be behind his ruined friendship and, hence, sent her those pictures," the officer said.

Dutta has been booked under sections 292A (circulation of obscene materials), 509 (act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 504 (insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 66A (sending offensive, annoying or threatening email, SMS or MMS), 67 (publishing of obscene material in electronic form) and 67A (transmitting sexually explicit material) of the Information Technology Act.
