The Dadar police have registered a case against an 18-year-old collegian from Delhi for allegedly sending obscene photographs over the phone to a girl. The girl is a roommate of the boy's girlfriend, and the police say he suspected she had caused a rift in their friendship. The boy, Aniket Prabhir, got in touch with a former schoolmate through a social networking site. The girl had left the Delhi school after class four. Today, she is studying hotel management in Mumbai.

"In Mumbai, Prabhir's girlfriend lived in a rental accommodation along with a roommate. Sometimes, when the girl was short of balance on phone, she used her roommate's phone to communicate with Prabhir. In this way, Prabhir got acquainted with the roommate and started chatting with her on the social networking website," a police officer said. Sometime ago, Prabhir had an argument with his girlfriend and she stopped answering his calls. On March 19, the girlfriend's roommate lodged a complaint with the police saying she received obscene pictures the previous day on her phone from Prabhir's phone number.

"It appears that Prabhir suspected the roommate to be behind his ruined friendship and so committed this act. We will send a team to Delhi to question Prabhir and seize his phone," the officer said.

Meanwhile, the police have registered a case under sections 292A (circulation of obscene materials), 509 (act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 504 (insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 66A (sending offensive, annoying or threatening email, SMS or MMS), 67 (publishing of obscene material in electronic form), 67A (transmitting sexually explicit material) of the Information Technology Act.
