The Vashi police have arrested a college teacher for allegedly raping a 23-year-old engineering student for over two years promising marriage.

The accused's 61-year-old father has been arrested for abusing and assaulting the victim and has been booked under the Prevention of Atrocity Act. Four other family members are likely to be arrested soon.

According to the police, the accused Sumit Patankar is a native of Sangli and he teaches at a renowned college in Kharghar. The victim, who too hails from the same place, is studying in an engineering college in Koparkhairane and stays at a hostel in Vashi.

Patankar, an M Tech, met the victim around three years ago and proposed marriage. The victim accepted the proposal and they had been in relationship since. Patankar later established a physical relationship with her.

"The accused's family was, however, not ready to accept the woman as she belonged to a lower caste. They abused and assaulted her when she went to meet them in Pune a couple of months ago. Even after that the victim did not react as the accused had promised to marry her," said Mukund Kulkarni, assistant inspector from Vashi police station.

Patankar, however, stopped receiving the victim's phone call three weeks ago. When she met him and asked the reason, he told her that he was not ready to marry her and so she should "go away from his life".

The victim's father, who is a policeman in Sangli, approached the Vashi police and registered an FIR against the whole family of Patankar. The police arrested Patankar and his father Ratnakar from Sangli on Friday evening.

While Patankar has been booked under sections 376, 420, 417, 323, 504, 506 and 34 of the IPC, his father has been booked under sections 3, 1, 11 of the Prevention of Atrocity Act. The Vashi court has remanded them in police custody till May 28.
