Mumbai shivered through an unexpectedly cold morning with the mercury dropping to 12 degrees Celsius, 7 degrees below normal, on Monday. This is the coldest December the city has seen in the last two years. The last time was in 2011, when the city experienced a drop to 11.4 degrees Celsius.

"This is due to a western disturbance because of the northern winds entering the city, bringing down the temperature. Since the rest of the country is a lot colder, these winds are bringing down the mercury in Mumbai as well," said V K Rajeev, director of weather forecast, Indian Meteorology Department.

In the last few days, Mumbaikars have been experiencing the climatic equivalent of a rollercoaster ride. After a week of hot days, the city saw it's first rainfall in December, in a decade. There had only been traces of precipation in 2008 and 2009.

"The showers had brought down the temperature. On Sunday, the minimum temperature recorded was 22.4 degrees Celsius. As the northerly winds continue to enter the city, the city's climate will slowly begin to stabilize," said Rajeev.

The city also recorded a significant change in humidity. It had a relative humidity of 80 per cent on Sunday, but on Monday, the relative humidity was between 50 per cent in Santa Cruz and 42 per cent in Colaba, which also contributed to making the day colder still.

CBD Belapur resident, Abhineet Menon, 25, was unprepared for the sudden chill this morning, "I was running late for work, so I was really surprised by such a cold morning. I was literally freezing in my rickshaw at 10 o clock! In fact, even the afternoon was so pleasant that we didn't turn on the air conditioning at our office in Dadar, which is unusual for a Mumbai afternoon."

The only times the mercury dropped lower in the last decade in December, was in 2005 with 11.6 and 2011 with 11.4. The record for the coldest day in December was in 1949, when the temperature dropped to 10.6 degree Celsius.
