"I had to literally tip-toe to dodge the cow dung outside the Chandanwadi crematorium. Doesn't one have the right to mourn in peace?" exclaimed Renu Kapoor, an active member of the Colaba Advanced Locality Management (CALM), who has written an online letter to the C ward department, complaining about the pathetic condition of the Marine Lines-based facility.

Talking about her experience at Chandanwadi, Kapoor said, "I had gone there to conduct the last rites for a close relative. We could see women grazing their cows around a broken gate. The inside of the crematorium was even worse. The place was unkempt, with bottles, flowers and food thrown around. Benches had grease on them and there was no shaded spot to take shelter during rains."

The letter further stated that the broken path leading to the entrance was splattered with fresh cow dung. The place was also infested with rats.

Sunil Paldal, who had a similar experience at the crematorium, said, "I felt sorry to see that our relatives were going to be cremated amid all the filth and stink. Some construction was also going on inside the crematorium?"

According to some sources, the electronic crematorium has, in fact, been shut for the last one-and-a-half month for maintenance. When queried, a caretaker said, "It will take a couple of days more. We are hoping to reopen the crematorium by July 11."

When dna contacted Joint Executive Health Officer, BMC 'C' ward, Dr Gujjar, he said, "The electronic crematorium hasn't been upgraded since 1985. The coils have started to rust. We had sent out a public notice regarding the shutdown two months ago."

Dr Gujjar added, "Since the crematorium is shut, labourers have been shifted to other places. Within a few days, all complaints will be addressed."
