Colaba-Churchgate top South Mumbai list of waste processing defaulters

The high number of state and central government offices in Colaba-Churchgate are posing difficulties for A-ward office of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to perform better in waste segregation and processing, as the offices take time for required clearances. The total number of bulk generators of garbage in A-ward is 208, but as per the list in possession of DNA, only 26 bulk generators have complied to the notices sent by BMC on solid waste management (SWM). 

It is not only A- ward, but also D-ward of BMC comprising of areas like Grant Road and Malabar Hill, which is performing poor in waste segregation as out of 100 notices served in D-ward, only 26 bulk generators have complied.

Assistant Municipal Commissioner, A-ward, Kiran Dighavkar said, “I am aware that many bulk generators are yet to start processing waste, but A ward has many government office buildings who take time for getting required clearances to go ahead in any project. While, the ward also as many big hotels and restaurants, we are having meetings to deciding upon plots which can be used for waste processing units”.

The other wards in South Mumbai area are B-ward (Masjid, Dongri) where out of 19 bulk generators none are processing waste, in C-ward (Zaveri Bazaar, Marine lines) out of 21, 8 are processing waste while in E-ward (Byculla, Mumbai Central) out of 38, 23 are not processing waste.
