The geo-technical survey of phase-I of the proposed Coastal Road project will be completed by May-end, according to a senior civic official involved in the project. At present, survey work for the first phase is underway near the Worli sea face.
The first phase had received approval from the Union environment ministry’s expert committee in April. In the first phase, the BMC will build a 10 km toll-free road between Marine Drive and the Worli end of Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The total length of the coastal road is 29.22 km connecting Marine Drive to Kandivli.
Mohan Machiwal, chief engineer of Coastal Road Project said, “The geo-technical survey of phase I is underway, and it will be completed latest by May end.” He added that data obtained in the survey will be used by the civic body while drafting the tender documents.
Another civic official said that as part of the survey, over 150 boreholes have been drilled and distance of each borehole is between 40 to 50 metre along a 9.98 km stretch.
Machiwal said that the geo-technical survey involves testing of the soil and the rocks to find out whether the area can handle the weight of the bridge.
