While 17 firms have expressed interest for the construction of phase 1 of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's ambitious Coastal Road project, these firms have now been asked to submit more exhaustive information on their construction experience, their financial details, and their detailed plans on how the project will be completed. This was after the BMC found a 'shortfall of documents' and felt the information initially provided by the firms were of a basic and 'general' nature.

"We have asked the package-I bidders to submit clarifications and required information till May 31. For the package-II and IV bidders, we will ask them for these details in the first week of June", a BMC official said. He added that BMC wanted realistic and qualitative design plans from the firms.

The firms, who have shown interest in the project are Reliance Infra, Hyundai Development Company, Larsen & Toubro, Nagarjuna Construction Company, Hindustan Constuction company, SK Engineering and Construction, among others.

Request for qualification for phase 1 — from Marine Lines to Worli Sea Face — of the coastal road project from Marine Lines to Kandivli, were invited November 2016. After scrutiny of the additional documents sought from the 17 firms, qualified bidders will be declared, following which request for proposal for the project will be invited by mid-June. The construction work on phase-1 is expected to begin in November.

Phase 1 of the coastal road, which will stretch across 9.98 km, involves a project cost of Rs 5,303 crore. This initial phase is further divided into three sections. These are package-1, a 3.7 km stretch from Priyadarshani Park to Baroda Palace at a cost of Rs 2,719.75 crore, package 2, a 2.7 km stretch from Baroda Palace to Worli sea face at a cost of Rs 1,348.39 crore and package 4, a stretch of 3.6 km from Marine Drive to Priyadarshani Park at a cost of Rs 1,235.30 crore.

Package-3 is from the Bandra-end of the Bandra Worli Sea Link to Carter Road. However, it is not yet decided whether the BMC or the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will execute this part of the Coastal Road project.
