It came as a surprise for the Hewalekar couple. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis invited them to his bungalow Varsha to perform Ganesh puja on Thursday. Since 2006, Paramanand and his wife Preetam are facing social boycott in their native village in Sindhudurg district.

Paramanand and Preetam, who arrived in the city with a Ganesh idol, reached Mantralaya on Wednesday. According to the couple, they have been ostracised in their native village Mahadevwaadi in Kudal taluka because they oppose a few customs and traditions. The diktat of boycott was served by the Jaat Panchayat.

Paramanand said that they were prevented from entering the village when they wanted to go for installation of the idol in their house. He had approached the chief minister last year urging for the latter's intervention in the mater.

But despite the chief minister's order to end the boycott, they were not allowed inside the village. So, they decided to reach Mantralaya with their idol.

After reading news reports and coming to know about the Hewalekars reaching Mantralaya with the Ganesh idol, Fadnavis directed police officers to make arrangements for their stay. Later, he invited them to Varsha on Thursday morning and performed Ganesh puja with them.

Fadnavis heard the couple and directed the Sindhudurg district collector and superintendent of police to conduct an inquiry into the matter and take necessary action.

The Hewalekar couple expressed gratitude towards Fadnavis before leaving for their native village.
