At least hundred inmates will be handed over the documents related to the scheme at an event at Nagpur Jail which will be inaugurated by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on the occasion of the International Yoga Day.
Thirty thousand inmates across 54 prisons in Maharashtra will perform yoga at 8am sharp on the International Yoga Day on June 21. And the yoga session will come with a treat: prisoners will be served 'sheera' (a sweet dish made of semolina) after their performance. Not just that, the government will also announce its plan to cover jail inmates under two flagship schemes of the prime minister — Jan Dhan Yojna and Pradhan Mantri's Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojna.

"Inmates are extremely excited about the event as yoga will benefit them both physically and mentally. So far, inmates from all religions have shown interest in the programme. However, we have kept the programme as an open one and no one is being forced to participate in it," said Vijay Satbir Singh, additional secretary (home).
Sources said in preparation for the chief minister's visit, Nagpur jail has already started rehearsing for the performance with 20 inmates volunteering to teach yoga. Another 20 trained yoga teachers from outside have agreed to volunteer for the D-Day. Similar arrangements for the International Yoga Day have been made by all 54 prisons across the state which includes four open prisons and nine central jails. In all, they have 25,000-30,000 inmates.
Taking about the schemes, Singh said that the home department has worked out the technicalities like tying up with a bank to ensure that the schemes are implemented smoothly.
As per the Jan Dhan Yojna, inmates will come under accidental insurance cover of Rs1 lakh and a life insurance cover of Rs30,000 even while serving their sentence. However, the Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojna can be renewed either on a yearly basis or for a longer period of time. It will provide life insurance coverage on the death of the policyholder.
"The idea is to secure future of the family of inmates in case of any mishap," Singh added.
While the event is only day-long, yoga sessions will soon be made a regular feature of the jail curriculum, Singh said. "Yoga is essential for reformation of inmates as it brings peace to mind and soul," said Singh.
