Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has once again snubbed Shiv Sena by insisting on LED bulbs for streetlights, as they save power bills.

In a reply to a calling attention motion raised by Ameet Satam, Andheri MLA Fadnavis said that a survey of the lux of streetlights across the city would be done with the help of IIT experts. All corporations will be asked to use LEDs across Maharashtra.

What are the opposing arguments of the legislators?
Replacing conventional lights with LED bulbs at Marine Drive has become a bone of contention between the ruling allies, BJP and Sena.

On Thursday, the issue was put to discussion in the lower house through a calling attention motion. BJP legislators demanded replacement of the conventional lights by citing problems of law and order due to low illumination, while Sena legislator Sunil Prabhu along with NCP MLAs raised doubts on the life period and lux level of LED lights.

Where would the LED lights be put up?
CM Fadnavis made the announcement in the state assembly on Thursday despite stiff opposition from its ally Shiv Sena. The Maharashtra government will direct all the municipal corporations of the state to start using LED lights instead of conventional yellow lights. This includes use of LED lights at playgrounds, gardens and all type of public spaces apart from streetlights. "The state urban development department will issue directives to all the municipal corporations to start using LED lights and save energy," CM declared.

Why is the CM supporting LEDs?
The chief minister also clarified that various surveys being done by reputed institutions have proved that LED lights are any time better than the conventional yellow lights (sodium vapour lamps). He attempted to prove the benefits and necessity of LEDs according to the changing times. "As per norms of Indian Standard 1944, minimum light on streets must be 30 lux levels. The sodium vapor lamps provide around this level while LED gives illumination of 50 lux level," the CM said.

But Sena's Sunil Prabhu said, "Lux level of LED lights starts reducing very early which was proved even by experts from the field." NCP legislator Bhaskar Jadhav urged the government to change LED lights with the conventional yellow lights, citing visibility problems at Marine Drive.

How would the BMC's power bills be reduced with LEDs?
Besides, LED lights consume half of energy than sodium vapor lamps reducing the power bills by 50 per cent along with saving of energy. The electricity bills of BMC will be reduced to Rs 93 crore from the current Rs 163 crore per annum. In addition, life of LED lights is 50,000 hours as compared to 15000 hours of sodium vapor, asserted the CM.
