Keeping political war aside, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday gave a nod to Tejas Thackeray, son of Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray for collecting samples of crabs from fresh water for research purpose.
The Shiv Sena and the BJP have been at loggerheads almost for three years and Sena announced last week that they would go solo in 2019 polls. Sena mouthpiece Saamana has been acerbic on Fadnavis government over the last few months.
"Tejas Thackeray has requested permission to carry out collection of live crabs (Genus-Gratiana, Gubernatoriana, Ingletelphusa and Barytelphusa) for research purpose from Chandoli National Park of Sahyadri landscape. The main object of collection of live samples of crabs is the scientific study/research of the animal kingdom up to specialize study (sic)," said the agenda of the meeting of the Maharashtra State Board for Wildlife which was held on Wednesday at Sahyadri Guest House.
The board, which is headed by CM Devendra Fadnavis met on Wednesday afternoon. Tejas Thackeray is known for his love for animals and wildlife had also discovered three new species of freshwater crabs endemic to the Western Ghats, one of which was named after his family. This included Ghatiana atropurpurea (Amboli), Ghatiana splendida (Chakul) and Gubernatoriana thackerayi (Raghuveer Ghat).
Thackeray had published a paper about his discovery in Zootaxa, a journal for animal taxonomists.
Under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, the chief wildlife warden's consent is necessary for collecting samples of wildlife species and vegetation from protected areas like sanctuaries.
