Under fire from the opposition over the implementation of the loan waiver scheme for farmers, the state government will open a fresh window for agriculturists next month to apply for their loan write offs.

"The opposition and few farmers claimed that some could not apply for the loan waivers... Though our survey suggests that the number of such people is not huge, the cabinet decided that those who could not apply earlier or those whose applications failed due to weak biometrics will get a fresh opportunity to apply under the loan waiver scheme between March 1 and 31," said Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

He was speaking to the media on the eve of the budget session of the state legislature which begins from Monday. The state government will table 16 bills during the session.

Fadnavis said under this 'Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Shetkari Sanman Yojana', the state government had cleared 54,72,311 accounts and sent them to banks. Of these, 8,36,663 had been returned by the banks to the state government due to lacunae and 2,76,511 accounts had been cleared and returned to banks. "Till now, the banks have been given 46,35,648 accounts with funds authorised," added Fadnavis, stating that 30 lakh of these were for loan waivers and over 16 lakh were under the one time settlement (OTS) scheme.

Another 13 lakh applications for loan waivers which were found with discrepancies were sent to taluka-level committees for verification, said Fadnavis, adding that the scheme was being implemented in a transparent manner.

The area affected by hailstorms in Maharashtra was 2,62,878 lakh hectare of which 99,364 hectare was in Marathwada, 29,000 hectare in Nagpur and 2,513 hectare in Nashik divisions. Farmers who had over 33 per cent of their crop destroyed in the calamity will get compensation.

Fadnavis urged that a perception should not be created that committing suicide or attempting it in and around Mantralaya was a way to get ones' issues redressed and added that they were working on resolving such grievances at the ground level. "The opposition is seeing an opportunity in these suicides. I have never seen a more depressed opposition," he added.
