CM Devendra Fadnavis bats for integrated parking lots, takes stock of Mumbai's traffic situation

Expressing the need for integrated parking lots in Mumbai and Thane, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday asked the two civic bodies to explore the possibility of creating the lots on open spaces without hampering the prevailing policy on the latter.

Expressing the need for integrated parking lots in Mumbai and Thane, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday asked the two civic bodies to explore the possibility of creating the lots on open spaces without hampering the prevailing policy on the latter.

Fadnavis also reviewed traffic-related issues in Mumbai and Thane during the meeting, which saw minister of state Dr Ranjit Patil, additional chief secretary for transports Gautam Chatterji, BMC commissioner Sitaram Kunte, MMRDA commissioner UPS Madan, secretary to the home department Vinit Agrawal, BEST general manager Jagdish Patil, transport commissioner Mahesh Zagade, Thane commissioner of police Vijay Kamble, and Mumbai joint commissioner of police Dr BK Upadhyay in attendance. Former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar was the special invitee.

Chatterji demanded that parking for taxis and autorickshaws be considered in the corporation's parking policy.

Talking about the need to harness state-of-the-art technology for traffic management, Fadnavis said more CCTV cameras will be installed in Mumbai. He informed that special cameras will be put up at important points so that signal jumping, parking the vehicle ahead of stop line, and speeding can be monitored and punished.

"The state government will work towards providing infrastructure besides strengthening the public transport system," he added.
Upadhyay said Mumbai, which had 6.28 vehicles in 1991, has 24.75 lakh now, as per records on September 2014. In addition to vehicles registered in Mumbai, 1.5 lakh enter greater Mumbai daily, he added and said there was a need for creating 50,000 parking lots in Mumbai.

A presentation by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, which included area traffic control system, a master plan for Mumbai roads, coastal road project, Goregaon-Mulund Link Road, establishing a truck terminal, and a comprehensive mobility plan, was shown during the meeting.
Officials were also informed that a high-capacity mass transit route, 40m-wide, has been proposed in the development plan for Thane city, as well as a new railway station between Thane and Mulund.
