The Mumbai crime branch has arrested a close aide of fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim for threatening a Mumbai-based hotelier for Rs 50 lakh. The accused Ramdas Rahane (40) — a native of Ahmednagar, has been arrested for murder (Section 302), extortion (Section 387) of the IPC and for possession of arms under the Arms Act.

According to the police, Rahane was wanted for firing at builder Manish Dholakiya's bodyguard, Ajit Yerulkar on 6 February, 2011. When Rahane and his accomplices, who barged at Dholakiya's residence, were stopped by the receptionist, they started firing in the air following which the private security guards attempted to nab them.

The firing had occurred at Dholakiya's office in Marine Drive. Dholakiya was a builder-turned-hotelier and owned several properties in Mumbai. Dholakiya was running a hotel in Dubai in 1999. Rahane was wanted in eleven cases of extortion and murder registered against him by the Gujarat and Mumbai police.

The police had found that Dawood's brother, Anees Ibrahim had ordered the shootout over a property dispute. Anees and his aide, Salim Chiplun had asked Rahane to kill Dholakia. Rahane got in touch with an intermediary, who arranged shooters for Rs 3 lakh. The two shooters had reached Nashik, where they were received by Rahane's aide, Geetaram Jadhav. There was an ongoing dispute among members of the Dholakiya family over a couple of prime properties in Mumbai.

In 1989, Manish's father, Mahesh, and uncle Arvind were gunned down by Arun Gawli's men. They were suspected to be close to Dawood and had played a role in the murder of Babu Reshim in 1987. Reshim was Gawli's aide.

In 2012, shooters, Praveen Mishra (20) and Abhishek Singh (22) were arrested from Uttar Pradesh. The accused Geetaram Jadhav alias Mauli had allegedly providedthem shelter. Jadhav accompanied the shooters to Mumbai on the day of the attack and provided them revolvers. After shooting Dholakiya's bodyguard, the duo returned the weapons to Jadhav and boarded a train from Churchgate to reach Ghatkopar via Dadar.

Dilip Sawant, Deputy Commissioner of Police (crime), said, "We had received a tip-off that Rahane was hiding at his residence at Sangamner near Ahmednagar. A team had been dispatched to arrest him on Friday night. He was produced before the Esplanade court and remanded to police custody until June 30. A pistol and two-live rounds have been seized."
