A rather positive fervour has taken over the residents of this city; with every passing day more and more people are showing interest in cleaning beaches and the shoreline. The residents of Napean Sea Road were the lastest to do so. On Sunday, the residents removed seven tonnes of waste from the beach and lagoon at the Priyadarshini Park (PDP).

The 'Beach and Lagoon Clean Up' was organised by the residents and supported by the Rotary Club of Bombay Harbour and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). It saw the participation of children from BMC schools too.

"We organised the clean up after we noticed that int he past few weeks, a lot of waste dumped into the sea was thrown ashore during high tides. We had seen the same at Marine Drive and several other beaches in Mumbai, where locals had started similar drives. That's when we decided we should clean the beaches too because the sea had spewed garbage at PDP beach also," said Masood Saifudeen, President, Rotary Club of Bombay Harbour (RCBH).

He added, "Members of the PDP and the Assistant Municipal Commissioner along with BMC school children took part in the drive. We managed to clean one-third of the waste and will be cleaning the rest soon."

"We also feel that since we use the place every day and it is in our vicinity, the onus of cleaning it is on us," said Mukul Mehra, Secretary, Napean Sea Road Citizens' Forum (NSRCF).

"It took over two hours to clean the beach. Some participants were so invested in the process that they did not rest for over an hour," said Kumar Jain, a regular visitor of the park and a resident of the area.

"Around seven tonnes of waste was removed from the beach. Active participation of the public is essential to keep beaches clean," said V Mote, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, D ward.
