As part of the ongoing 'cleanliness week' being observed by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation along with other civil society groups, residents of Colaba and Cuffe Parade will clean up an entire (municipal) constituency on Saturday.
At least 70 to 80 volunteers, members of two local citizens associations – CALM and My Dream Colaba – along with 20 students of Colaba Municipal School and Dunnes Institute are expected to participate in the drive.

“During a recce, we found certain areas full of debris and filth. We will clean up four spots across constituency 227—Windy Hall Lane, Under President House, Sassoon Dock side, Kittridge Road garbage can and Persian Hotel, which is down the road that connects Cuffe Parade and Colaba,” said Priya Ubale, a citizen activist.

The drive will start at 9am after a pledge at the four spots. Following the clean-up, residents will gather at DSK lane to meet civic officials of A ward.

“We were impressed by the commitment shown by the residents and have extended our support,” said Shishir Joshi of Mumbai First.

“We are a little tired of tokenism being exhibited (in the drive), which involves just wielding brooms and photographs. We want to do a thorough job. As part of the drive, Dunnes students will carry placards and go door to door, educating people on cleanliness and the importance of keeping a bin at home,” said Ubale.

Exhibition, workshop
On Saturday, Sambhaji Maidan at Santacruz West will host an exhibition and workshop on decentralised solid waste management technologies by 15 to 20 organisations and individuals, who have successfully implemented such initiatives in several neighbourhoods across Mumbai. It's being organised by the Mahatma Gandhi Centre for Cleanliness, Sanitation and Community Health, along with other NGOs.
