It is time again for revellers to rejoice. The Pt. Ram Marathe musical festival has begun in Thane to regale classical music aficionados. The grand music festival, with entry open to all, has geared up to treat the audience to `Raani ki Baav', a dance drama, and `Preeti Sangam', a musical.

Celebrating its 10th year, the music festival commenced on Thursday at Gadkari Rangayatan, and will continue till November 14. The main attraction of this grand fest is the dance drama, `Raani ki Baav', performed by Thane's Nrityadhara dance academy, which is headed by famed Kathak danseuse Mukta Joshi. The drama is based on `Rani nu Bawdi', the famous architectural wonder of Gujarat.

The bawdi or well is more than 1000 years old and was a tribute paid to a husband by his wife. Constructed by queen Udaymati for her husband Bhimdev Solanki at Patan, Gujarat, this 64-metre-long and 20-metre-wide well is situated 27 metres below ground level and has been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO.

"We have tried to present the mystical history of this bawdi on stage through dance, audio and visual medium," says Joshi. The dance drama will be presented on November 12 at 8.30 pm, by close to 40 participants. Besides this, those who love musicals might enjoy `Preetisangam', a musical written by Acharya Atre, accompanied with music composed by Vasant Desai. Art enthusiasts will also be entertained with other famous natyasangeet (musicals) like, Deh Devache mandir (my body is god's temple), Aaj aapulya pratham preeticha sangam, etc, which will be staged on November 13, 4pm onwards.

Apart from these, artists like Sugya Mulye will perform bharatnatyam, while Maju Mehta, a senior disciple of Pt. Ravi Shankar and sister of Pt. Vishwamohan Bhat will play the sitar. The festival will conclude with performances of Swati Kolle (kathak), Pratibha Deuskar (vocal), and Vikas Katre (samvadini vadan).
