Civic standing committee ordered an anti corruption bureau (ACB) enquiry against civic officials who siphoned funds in crores for repairing around 16 Bombay Improvement Trust (BIT) chawls in Tadwadi in Mazagaon area. While these building were already given to developers for redevelopment, civic officials continued to withdraw funds in the name of repairing.

Leader of House Yashwant Jadhav brought the matter before the civic standing committee on Friday after a proposal for carrying out maintenance work of these buildings worth Rs 30 crore was tabled. Not only the proposal was rejected but the standing committee chairman Ramesh Korgaonkar also ordered an enquiry by ACB, following members sought the same.

Jadhav said that Annexure II of all 16 buildings was already prepared in 2006. Annexure II is the list of slum-dwellers eligible for free housing. This list is prepared by the competent authority and in case of BMC, the competent authority is the deputy collector or the assistant municipal commissioners. In 2008, letter of Intent (LoI) was issued while Intimation of Disapproval (IoD) was given to developer in 2009. IOD is an important authorization given to the builder by the BMC to redevelop an existing structure. However, the redevelopment could not be taken up due to which some residents approached court.

According to Jadhav, five of the 16 buildings or chawls have already been demolished as they were declared dangerous to live in. Shockingly, civic officials from building proposal department and ward office continue to withdraw funds for repairing these demolished buildings including of the ones where residents are still staying. "I was residing in one of the buildings and that was demolished. Now, I reside in a transit camp," said Jadhav, adding that funds were released for repairing of the demolished building and that building does not even exist.
